Lodging: Fukuya Ryokan
Day four was long, with lots of elevation. After heading out from our new favorite fishing village we started the steep climb back up to the main road. I thought that surely someone on their way to work would take pity on two pilgrims and give us a ride up but it was not to be.
About half way through the day we left the road and headed up a steep trail, gaining a pass rather then taking a long slog through the tunnel that the road passed through. The trail designers in Japan appear to believe that switchbacks are for wimps so we gained our elevation in a most efficient manner. It made for a good workout and the scenery was quite nice.
I've seen too many horror movies to ever use this rest hut
Our lodging was in a pleasant Inn in a small town where the food was brought to our rooms, something that is common in fancier places. It was a holiday evening and there were quite a few guests there. Aldin got a chance to play cards with one of our neighbors and I was accosted by another drunk guest of the establishment when I was doing laundry. He was really impressed by how tall I was. Didn't I hit my head on doorways a lot? (Yes, actually.)
The strawberries were pretty amazing and the salted fish was not bad either
