 Vongfong 2014

AKA Typhoon Day.  It started early, with a train ride to the spot when I left off last year.  The rain fell steadily but the wind wasn't too bad, and we saw other pilgrims out walking as we sat and ate our breakfast.

Being the adventurous type we took the scenic road that twisted and turned along the coast, rather then the highway the curved away from it.  The rain came and went for the first half of the day, sometimes with great intensity but usually just a sprinkle or nothing at all.  The wind was also highly variable, usually just a strong breeze but at times gusting so strongly that we would stagger to a stop before we could continue walking.

Walking through the tunnels that the road went through was especially interesting, as the wind would be funnelled down them and blow hard and constant as we walked through.  At least it was dry.  At the end of the tunnel the rain would be waiting, often falling horizontally instead of vertically.

We saw almost no one on the road, but we did run into a small group of monkeys.  They looked pretty soaked as the ran accross the road and into the relative shelter on the other side.

We made it into town around 1pm and stopped at a noddle shop inside a small mall.  We were both soaked through and dripping everywhere- the janitor followed us arround cleaning up the water that we left on the floor.  At the noodle shop we got our first gift of the trip, two free rice balls to help give us a little extra boost before we went back out into the typhoon.

Fighting the wind and constantly wet feet took their toll as the day wore on.  Aldin's feet especially were in bad shape, we didn't know it yet but the pad of his right foot was turning into one big blister.  By the end of the day we were running late and travelling at a snail's pace.  Just before we were about to turn the wrong way and get lost the owner of the inn that we were to stay at pulled up and offered to give us a ride the last mile to his place.  We accepted without hesitation.

Aldin does his best "weatherman on the spot" imitation.
